I went to school with an Iranian expat who was quite candid in both his praise and criticism of the Islamic Republic
Although he hated the religious nature of the government he praised the order, structure and attention to controlling graft, nepotism, corruption and waste it gave them.
He is a fellow Engineer so he had nothing but praise for Iranian creativity and resilience (in the field of science and technology) after a quarter century of sanctions and the support the govt provided for home grown solutions
I learned a lot from him and from reading the book "all the shahs men"
