Nobody is asking me, but here is what I would do to avoid war in the Israel/Gaza situation. Let me say, first, that the technology I mention exists and is quite sophisticated. Let me say, second, that I find what Hamas did utterly despicable, and do not believe that it would have been in any way possible without the active planning and participation of a government bent on [re]creating a 9/11 inside event.
The blood on both sides is horrifying.
Hamas engaged in collective punishment against Israeli civilians. Israel is now doing the same. Collective punishment is a war crime. Is teaching your children that Jews are, for reasons of theology, and thus, without any possibility of solutions, inextricably evil a crime? I think it lays the ground for more war crimes.
So here is what I propose (and which no one is listening, so far as I know):
Every woman, girl and male child (under the age of 7 ) in Gaza should be immediately taken to a comfortable, safe, clean and pleasant area where they are supplied with clothing, shelter, food, water, medical care, education, books, toys and other humane comforts.
Every boy over the age of 7 and every man should be taken to another areas where they, too, are given safe, clean and decent food, clothing, shelter and medical attention.
Each man and boy should be interviewed using polygraph (lie detector) and vocal analysis technology (police use it all the time to detect lying) to determine whether they are involved with aggressive activities (terrorism/sabotage, etc.) and whether they are supporters of such action.
If they are definitively not, they should be promptly reunited with their families and given every opportunity to live a decent, comfortable and normalized life at a high standard of living. Their comfort and prosperity should be valuable enough to not want to jeopardize.
If they are, then they should be investigated for past crimes, tried and incarcerated if found guilty, and segregated from their community - in humane circumstances - until they are no longer deemed to be a threat.
I understand that women perpetuate oppressive and destructive regimes and values, too, but generally they are more likely to fear losing what they have if it involves safety and health for their families and loved ones.
There will be some men and boys who remain adherents to violent assaults on Jews. Frankly, I am not sure what to do with them, but killing or torturing them is NOT the answer. Once we have data about what they are, why they believe what they do, how they got that way and how many there are, we can figure out what happens next.
They, too, MUST be treated well, humanely, well fed, clothed, given productive activities to engage in.
However, the enhanced safety, comfort and prosperity of the rest of the population will, I believe, make their likelihood of jeopardizing that state less and less likely.
I would maximize person to person contact with "the other side", starting in toddlerhood and continuing through all ages.
School curricula must not include hate but valid discourse and discussion must be part of the community's life since ideas must be able to breathe and grow in order to mature.
I am talking about enhancing life, rather than advancing genocide.
But what do I know? I am only a human being who loves humanity, a Jew who believes that the State of Israel must survive, a political activist who believes in free speech and human rights and a psychiatrist who believes that giving people something positive to lose and nothing positive to gain by bad behavior works more effectively than leaving people with nothing positive to lose through that bad behavior but the perception that they have something positive to gain by it.
There are people, real people, on both sides. We can sort out the terrorists from the victims. Let's do it.
In the 1930's, my grandfather lost his ancestral lands, his wife, his life savings, and his career. Members of my father's family have been mistreated by the Israeli army. I've eaten in a Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan, share bread with members of the Syrian army, and visited Lebanon during the civil war. Obviously I have a ton of empathy for those who live in the countries surrounding Israel, and I materially support some of them in a big way. Nevertheless, I recognize Israel's right to exist and defend itself. Also I note that while my ancestors have moved among several countries since the 1800's, they always focused on being good citizens wherever they were, and all my grandfather's descendants are thriving now. I wish everyone who has the misfortune of being a refugee could both be willing to assimilate and be allowed to assimilate, wherever they end up.
Also, my wife's grandmother lost her home, husband, freedom, and life savings in the 1960's in a different part of the world. All of her descendants are thriving now, using the same formula.
Assimilation doesn't mean losing ones culture, language, cuisine, religion...but it does mean being flexible enough to fit into a different place, where people have different customs and prejudices.
