Hydrogen peroxide diluted in normal saline rinse is like scrubbing bubbles to break up mucus and pathogens.

I don't bother to dilute. I've been using full strength for a year now. It works.

I use full strength everyday after I brush my teeth, am and pm.

Dr McCullough has advocated this for a while and it works. Feel any tinge of a cold and this rinse banishes it.

Thanks for sharing these detailed instructions. POVIDONE-Iodine has been hard to find in my corner of BCs lower mainland, but we managed to procure two 500 mL bottles. Hydrogen peroxide is more abundant.

YVR here. I buy baking soda and plain old hydrogen peroxide (Shoppers or London Drugs) for household cleaning and skin scrapes. What's the idea: just use a bit of hydrogen peroxide in water, gargle and spit?

Expand full comment
DrugDiscovery's avatar

Hello Zelda! I believe the idea is to prepare a virus killing solution that you can use to clean your nose, mouth and throat. You can prepare the solution using either of the products (Povidone or peroxide). I believe you’re in my neck of the woods (YVR) so Povidone is either Amazon or shopping around. Follow the instructions using the peroxide. You have it, and you can find it on Save-on, LD, Shopper’s.... Follow the instructions that Dr. Alexander posted. You will be fine!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm a zero on the 'fear' scale. My family and I will try the 'el cheapo' LD/Shopper's peroxide/water gargle. :-)

Drug Discovery I got Povidone from Amazon. Arrived within 6 days 10%. They will tell you it is for surfaces but you can dilute and get your required %. Some countries sell it in the form of tiny crystals in a box (for decades). If that is the case just take a few 1-2 crystals, a cup of water, gargle and spit out.

Hey Bibi! Thanks for the hint. I wanted first to make sure it was available locally. I even went to a specialty pharmacy across the town’s General Hospital. That’s where I found one, but they had nothing else in stock. How’s that three-legged hound of yours?

He is fine! Master of Walks! Chasing birds anyway he likes it. We are having a lot of fun walking uphill surrounded by scents of wild eucaliptus! I replied to your question in a substack where you asked me first :)

Povidone 10% has been used for decades. it is safe. 10% is for skin/topical before operations kind of interventions. so make sure you dilute it. Thanks for asking about my 3 leg dog. I will let him know :)

Well, give the hound some of mine virtual treats! On second thoughts: too “AI” for my taste. Maybe one day I will have the opportunity to do it live.

what about the prepared OTC put out by Betadine? They have a sore throat spray as well

as a nasal spray. Good? Also my husband is on Thyroid meds, is this a no go for him? Under active.

DrugDiscovery's avatar

Hey Chris! I’m not an MD or PharmaD, so this isn’t medical advice. The spray I got has peppermint “flavour” added to it. No problem spraying on throat, but I don’t think it can be safely used intranasal (in nose). If you plan on doing nasal flushes, go with the dilute peroxide. Again, not an MD, not PharmaD, but just a common sense guy.

Dr. Alexander please urgently clarify this . .

"10% Povidone-Iodine (PI) (Betadine) or Hydrogen Peroxide (HP)"

The "or" does not apply to the "10%" part of the statement surely?

10% is actually very strong, a d used to kill all plants and organisms in the ground.

Never(!!!) 10% Hydrogen Peroxide (HP) for ingestion or self medicating internal use?!

Expand full comment
Michelle's avatar

The 10% was only for the PI. He is recommending using 3% hydrogen peroxide and then diluting it further.

Trivially, but just to be sure, sodium hypochlorite is symbolized chemically as NaClO (not "NaHCl"). Anyway, I'll be preparing the nasal solution of dilute H2O2 for my wife and myself as we somehow managed to develop several moderate COVID-like symptoms over the last few days, despite using the full range and level of listed preventatives for many, many months.

If I mix the PVP-I solution in advance, in a nasal spray bottle like the one pictured, how long does it last? How long before I have discard and mix a fresh bottle?

For the nasal rinse, directions say to use tap or bottled water. I thought only distilled water should be used in nasal rinses? Would like to know so I can use this preventive treatment for a trip next month.
