Everybody, especially Seniors, needs to know how to protect themselves, and contrary to popular belief, Martial Arts is not the way to do it. That exMarine knew Combat, not sport. I highly recommend Tim Larkin's Target Focused Training methods. He has excellent FREE videos on his website that teach valuable skills of Self Protection, NOT "self defense". Anyone who is merely being "defensive" is going to end up in the morgue. Faced with a dangerous attacker, one has to know how to do serious injury to them instantly, not play "defensive" games, especially if they are bigger, stronger, faster, younger, etc.! But every human has vulnerable points that are still vulnerable no matter how big they are and how big their muscles are. Learn them and you will feel a lot safer!

My pleasure!

There are too many crazy, dangerous idiots out there, and far too many people end up being victims of violent crime because they lack situational awareness, and they have no clue how to protect themselves if they do get into a bad situation. It is actually quite easy to disable or even kill someone if you know how. Actually, the things to do to protect yourself are all the things that Martial Artists are trained NOT to do! Duh!

You also learn that you must never "put your hands on" someone UNLESS it is a life-or-death situation BECAUSE it is so very easy to kill someone. Aggressive assholes who get into stupid altercations like bar fights are simply utter morons, because if they accidentally kill someone they will end up in prison for a long time for nothing!

My martial arts training did not teach us how not to harm someone. There were techniques we were taught that were specifically TO harm someone. The trick is not using one of those during a practice bought. I can take out someone very easily and quickly with a short snap kick to the knee. I can do a palm strike from 3" away that will put a person in the hospital with broken ribs. It's all in your mental awareness of what the situation is. I can assure you that if someone was bent on doing me harm, he would have a caved in larynx, broken ribs, broken leg, broken arm or many other broken or damaged areas QUICKLY. If he was armed in ANY WAY besides bare handed, I'd shoot his ass right between the peepers.

As I've aged, and even with two 2nd degree black belts in 2 styles of martial arts, Chinese Kenpo and Ji Do Kwon Tae Kwon Do, I've switched to a new Martial art, Glock 30 .45. or Glock 29 10mm according to how I feel any certain day. And I don't leave home without one. Ask my wife! And for that matter even at HOME I've got it on my side or extremely close at all times.

I'm going to give you a pass on this foolish statement that does not being to apply to all situations. I know many martial Artists that would light most people up, and a few who don't deserve their rank. No one rule applies to all persons.

Expand full comment

I'm not your pal, I don't need a "pass" from you, and Martial Artists get killed quite readily in non-sport street crime attacks by not-formally-trained thugs who don't follow ANY of the rules of sportsmanship that would apply in the ring! Vicious asocial thugs would knife you in a heartbeat or catch you off guard with a brick to your head or any of dozens of other ways to do-in the best-trained and conditioned MMA, Krav Maga, or whatever competition athlete. The real world is vastly different from the sports world of Martial Arts. Remember: in a sudden, dire emergency threat situation the body goes into automatic "emergency mode" and the programmed-in automatic behaviors take over. As they say, "you do what you train for". When people spend years training for sanctioned competition, with specific rules TO KEEP THE CONTESTANTS FROM DISABLING OR KILLING EACH OTHER, you are actually at a disadvantage in a real-life, desperate situation where your only realistic option for survival IS to quickly maim or kill your attackers. This is not my opinion but the wisdom of the survivors who have "been there, done that".

To add. We do seem to agree on a whole host of others things though, COVID vaccines, Climate change, One world order, etc. For what that's worth.

Thank you for your nice comments. Say I was wondering. Given all the advise and knowledge you have shared with us, what exactly are your credentials if I may ask? I was just curious if you were speaking from a position of first hand knowledge or simple repeating what someone told you.

Sorry, I'm a curious sort. :-)

Lol! I'm a "curious sort", too, and have spent 70+ years indulging my curiosity. Mostly in the areas of medicine, nursing (Licensed Vocational Nurse), nutrition, health, survival (including a week at Tom Brown, Jr's Nature and Survival School in New Jersey), Animal Husbandry major at California State Polytechnic University (have owned, honeybees, horses, sheep, rabbits, pigeons, quail, guinea fowl, and CURRENTLY have llamas, milk goats [Nubians], Kunekune pigs, geese, ducks, chickens, and my latest thing: Tibetan YAKS!), Licensed Landscape Contractor with extensive Arboraculture experience, Class A truck driver (and some heavy equipment operating experience including backhoes, and tractors, wheeled and tracklayers), some car repair experience (my dad taught college level auto mechanics and always "moonlighted", so I sort of "grew up" around garages), have done woodworking and some construction, some concrete work (slabs, blocks, and brick), some electrical and plumbing (in addition to landscape-related), ceramic artist, various fiber arts, cooking (& growing food and preparation from scratch), etc., etc., and for the three years before COVID I went through the Alcohol and Addiction Counselor training program at my local Community College. Then at the beginning of COVID, I basically switched to full-time studying the pandemic, particularly the medical aspects of it.

I guess you could say I've been a lifelong student of a lot of things. I'm NOT a Martial Artist (too much work!), but took some classes in "self defense" starting decades ago, and then I discovered Tim Larkin and his program a few years ago and spent probably a hundred hours studying his videos. I'd love to do a live training with him, but I'm pretty tied down now with my critters. And I'm starting to train my yak calves . . . a challenge! I want to have a working team of yak "oxen", and I'm just crazy enough to want to try to train my bull yak calf to be ridden when he gets big enough (VERY "iffy" proposition . . . and will depend some on his personality).

Just don't ask me about rocket science! Lol!

Most situations build up. IF you are aware, things should always go in your ball park. When I go to a restaurant with my wife I insist on a seat where I can see the door. And as for some of your statements, including the one where you claim you never took martial arts because of the time constraints, I'd say you're writing outside of your knowledge.

Since situations typically do build up I'm taking note of the people interacting with me and asking myself which to hit first, where to hit them to disable them or destroy them. I had a confrontation with two "law enforcement" officers in the back yard of my property and I can assure you that they both would have been dead if the younger one hadn't diffused the situation. I don't ass kiss anyone just because they are wearing a badge. And I'm sure I wouldn't be writing this if I had to deal with the situation in a deadly manner. BUT you would have read about it in the news as I took out a bunch of those two assholes buddies as they came into the fray. Starting at 1500 yards.
