It was a very contagious "virus," but it definitely wasn't lethal to almost everyone who contracted it. That's why we didn't have a spike of all-cause deaths beginning in, say, December 2019 or January 2020.
I'd also highlight the antibody test that was done of crew members of the U.S.S. Teddy Roosevelt aircraft carrier. The Diamond Princess gets most of the attention on IFR take-aways, but this antibody study of crew members strongly suggested that 60 percent of this 4,850 crew had already been infected by this virus by the time blood was drawn for this antibody study (in late April 2020).
Notably, only one crew member died from Covid (and he was 44, probably one of the oldest crew members on the ship). That means in the worst-possible spread environment, nobody under the age of 44 died from this "lethal" disease. This study right there should have told the world there was nothing healthy young or middle age people had to worry about from this virus.
Also, my take-away from the Roosevelt outbreak "case study" is that this virus came on board that ship before it left port in San Diego on January 17, 2020. That is, sailors already had been infected before the virus was even supposed to be in America. How else did this virus get on this ship and begin to infect so many people?
So: CDC officials knew the real IFR from Covid for healthy young people by April 2020. They also had to know this virus was spreading in America in 2019.
