No, I don't believe China has been remotely honest about COVID in their country, but then again, neither has the US. In our case, it's massive over-exaggeration; in China, it's pretending the disease doesn't exist. Or else, they're just shooting everyone who tests positive.
Dr. Paul Alexander, it is entirely possible. They adopted the policy of zero positive case, meaning if there's even one case, they will lock down the whole province. Therefore upon the first positive case, all the random testings end and the province goes into lock down, so you only have 1 case. As for deaths, they are under lockdown, you can't even go to the hospital. All they have is a body in an apt a week or two later, it has to be just due to natural causes.
They are adopting the slow, controlled approach to reach herd immunity. It is not a bad approach for plague management. But it does take a high economic toll and the citizens will continually face another lockdown.
China’s primary concern is ‘stability’ meaning the communist regime stays in charge. They have always fudged their numbers to fit their narrative. Communists / socialists always do. History just repeating itself.
Dr Alexander, we are in a pre war situation. Naturally China would be very parsimonious with disease information, just like it is with everything else.
Possibly the upcoming Winter Olympics scheduled to take place in China is why the data is being manipulated.

I believe it was a planned release, but who planned it is up for debate.
With china having much to gain, and western powers doing viral games shortly before this happened and the massive transfer of wealth to certain folks.
on the other hand I seem to remember hearing that the Chinese lab put out a contract to upgrade their air con. hell of a piece of timing.
