Sooner or later the acrobats are swinging and the magicians are stuffing flea-ridden rabbits into worn top-hats and the elephants are balancing precariously on balls before empty stands, and it is time to fold up the tables and the tents, lead the animals back into their cages, hitch the wagons to their teams and seek business elsewhere. Thus the Covid Circus in the Federal Republic of Germany finally folded up shop and left town in 2023.

There was hesitation in its final days. Christian Drosten, who had declared the pandemic over already in December 2022, suffered a fit of nostalgia as German states began lifting the last mask mandates in January.

Suddenly he decided the pandemic might still have some show left in it, but when enthusiasm has collapsed and the momentum has turned the other way, not even the highest virus wizard can turn things around. A few uneasy months passed with no pandemic restrictions and some awkward quibbling among circus masters about how to sell the final act. Finally, arch-clown Karl Lautertard conceded in April that the pandemic was over in Germany. Drosten reappeared in May with a lecture about how we owed our final liberation to the virus miracle juice, and about how the pandemicists reserve the right to inflict lockdowns and school closures upon us in future pandemics. One day, the Circus will return. It may be in five years or ten, but it is not gone forever.
