my mom, with 4 broken ribs from a fall and lung tissue scarring from two years of untreated bacterial pneumonia, was given the "choice" of pressurized oxygen or mechanical ventilator rather than adequate painkillers which would have allowed her to breathe on her own.
she told them where to put the ventilator and they got her to sign a DNR. it only took 4 days in the hospital for her condition to degrade sufficiently for that form to take effect.
at least family was gathered around and she wasn't in pain for the last few minutes. rest in peace, mom.
