As I have known for a couple of decades, even the 'smartest' among us (I am an engineer having spent 20+ years in the company of multiples of engineering/small business/entrepreneurs - highly intelligent and very successful individuals) are easily manipulated through psychological warfare (if you do an in-depth study of the rise of the Nazi party and the societal degradation of Germany before and during WWII this is easily understood) to the point of actually destroying themselves.
