As I have known for a couple of decades, even the 'smartest' among us (I am an engineer having spent 20+ years in the company of multiples of engineering/small business/entrepreneurs - highly intelligent and very successful individuals) are easily manipulated through psychological warfare (if you do an in-depth study of the rise of the Nazi party and the societal degradation of Germany before and during WWII this is easily understood) to the point of actually destroying themselves. This isn't a Fauci, Collins, et.al. problem - it is us. As Dr. Jordan Peterson famously said: 'you are the Nazi and you just might enjoy it'. In the end, I am the only one in my group of 20+ who didn't bend to any of the mandates or requirements. That is a pretty devastating statistic.
