I've been seeing research about xylitol having virucidal mechanisms of action. Since pathogens hang in the nasal cavity while they build up, doing a daily rinse/cleanse helps. When I used povidone I definitely notice a burning sensation, kind of similar to eating a strong Horseradish. With Xlear i do notice some tingling that is probably from the salt. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9395150/

Yes xylitol has anti-pathogenic qualities….that is why natural toothpastes have put it in them for years now…..but….anything that burns and salt does not burn if it is in the right proportion to our cellular levels of salt …. Our cells are make of salt so if the product burns it is not the salt….but and i read this years ago, if anything burns do not use it as it is killing all cells like a flame would……and we need the good pathogens in our mouth and nose…....burning does not mean it is killing just pathogens…..burning is not good at all in your mouth, in your eyes anywhere…..hot spices are working differently but i would never overdo that either…..
