Based on what I have read, this conflict may have nothing to do with religion and everything to do with land and politics. The hostilities seem to have begun as a result of a severe drought, which led to fighting between nomadic herders and sedentary farmers. Politics took over in 2003, when the herders were recruited to fight against a rebel army seeking to overthrow the government. The rebellion was the result of the government favoring some tribes over others. It is my understanding that politics in Africa tends to be tribal and that such favoritism is the rule.
