1981 was the year my veterinarian ex-husband graduated from vet school. Initially it was only the injectable form. Very expensive at the time but worth it. It meant we could totally abandon the nasty and dangerous practice of tube-worming for bot worm grubs that spent part of their life cycle attached to the stomach mucosa before letting go to slide out, pupate and become new flies. As near as I can tell, bot flies are extinct now. Its been a long time since I've seen a horse with bot fly nits glued to the hairs on the lower forelegs of a horse. I've often wondered if the mass use of veterinary ivermectin has anything to do with the general decrease in insects in some parts of the country. Back in the early 80's we still had bug splat on our windshields. Look up the botfly life cycle. Very interesting.
