We see this in miniature when looking at audiences for shows like Colbert, Maher, Oprah, etc. One reason Guttfeldt is better is when his jokes are bad, the audience lets him know it. He then acknowledges it, and he and the audience laugh and bond more.

We can also see the phenomena with Lefty crowds at things like the Oscars ceremony. There though, attendees have the additional 'prod' of realizing they may get put on tv based on their reaction or non-reaction. A Hollywood version of the old Commie Soviet Union party meetings, where people kept an eye out for whichever guy would stop clapping first when the 'glorious leader' spoke some banal commie platitude. Nyet good, comrade!
