I'm from NYC, Tyson went to one of the special high schools where you have to apply and sometimes even take a test to get into, they are public schools with private school advantages.

Other special high schools include John Dewey (where I went with Spike Lee and Colin Quinn), the "Fame" school, Stuyvesant (I got in but didn't go because it's in Manhattan and I lived in Brooklyn, my brother-in-law went to Stuyvesant), there's also Brooklyn Tech, and Edward R. Murrow which focuses on journalism, my mother named it btw.
These schools were created for kids who were not wealthy enough to go to the private schools like Collegiate and Horace Mann and Dalton, but were determined to be deserving of a parallel enriched education and environment. And also Julliard.
