I'm sorry, but didn't the parents talk to their kids and read to them during lockdowns, or didn't they potty train them?? I don't get it. They don't JUST do those things in school, parents do those things at home. I'm missing something. I get that kids lost learning time at school, but I don't how that would affect their speech and potty training.

This sounds like a parent problem to me. I certainly was NOT in school at age 4 (and was always very THANKFUL that I had not been forced to be in school 1 second before it was necessary.) My parents put me directly into 1st grade at age 5 and that was the appropriate thing to do as we didn't have kindergarten back then. I'm STILL thankful that I wasn't forced to waste another year in school. As it turned out, I spent 6 glorious years in college taking huge overloads each quarter or semester, following my own personal interests and then I took 40 graduate courses later on to get trained for something I was truly interested in and continue to use to this day. I could've sought a Dr's degree instead, but I didn't want a bunch of external demands placed on me, nor would I tolerate a bunch of pseudo-intellectuals second-guessing me!

I'm almost 70 now, in excellent health, and thankfully, I still get up each day thrilled to use the skills I learned all those years ago to teach children how to become marvelous musicians through singing, playing violin or piano!

What a life!!!!

What? 4 and 5 year olds were toddlers during covid lockdowns, why would they be excluded from school when they are not even school age? Why didn't the parents potty train them while they were locked down? This makes no sense.

Not just in the UK but also right here in the US.my grandchildren who are 12,8 and 6 can not read only one the 8 yr. Old has any inclination to even try.they attend school allows students to pick what they want to do for the day.like gardening or playing.they don't want to anything that challenges them.I feel this is the society we have now and it's not just the children.

"nearly half of children in UK subjected to lockdowns cannot speak and not potty-trained, everything is upside down, children have lost substantial capacity development"

Same could be said for all POTUS since Jan 21, 2021.

Twenty years ago I asked my neighbor why she didn't teach her 4 old daughter the alphabet, how to tell time, and basic numbers. Her reply was 'That's what school is for'. I bit my tongue so I'd still be welcome in their home & be able to teach the kid the basics. Which I did, and I was greatly rewarded with being adopted as an uncle.

So I assume parents in 2020, the ones who expect schools to do all the teaching for them, were in a holding pattern, waiting for preschool & kindergarten to open up again after being told it would take 3 weeks to flatten the curve, while silently staring at their phones & laptops, hypnotized by the great Covid psy-op fear campaign, instead of facing & interacting with their children in their free time.
