Why would they have understood it? They didn't understand anything else . . . just as the government morons running the "pandemic" response in the U.S. COULDN'T have done a worse job. Think about it! . . . if NOTHING at all had been done in response to COVID, the pandemic would have quickly run its course and been over with by late summer 2020 or so. People would all have good natural immunity and there would have been no zillion variants driven by "vaccines" that didn't work and only killed people!
The Chinese understood it completely, the least vaccinated were the elderly- the ones they wanted to rid themselves of, because of the one child policy, the population structure is like a lot of western countries. The young at the bottom- it’s like an inverted triangle, with the aged being too heavy. Add to that as the economy has transformed a lot of younger Chinese are choosing not to have children.
China could lose 50-100 million and it wouldn't matter. Commies have a history of murdering their citizens. Although China has pretended to be more capitalistic, underneath it is still commie complete with murder and control of the population using social credit scoring and digital prison.

They waited until the Wuhan and Delta strains were gone and a much milder variant was circulating before they opened up. They're either gambling that Omicron doesn't have a HIV-like 7 year average incubation period before the persisting virus or viral fragments and spike protein cause disease worse than AIDS or have decided that mass depopulation of their people will best serve the Party's goals.

Unlike most Americans, I have a Chinese client who lives near Beijing.
She went back to China from South Africa last year in December 2022 at the apparent height of post-lockdown China 10M dead body count.
I've spoken to her on videoconference many times since she left right up until her High Court motion hearing in June 2023.
Not once, did she mention covid, being welded into her apartment or people dropping in the millions like crushed fortune cookies on streets.
Conclusion: US media reporting about China is 100% unadulterated horseshit.
