A thought occurred to me about a year ago re. George Orwell's novel "1984", which I've read/listened to several times over the years. A unique "plot device" used by Orwell was having all action/scenes occur w/in only 1 (Oceania) of the 3 superstates (the other 2 being Eurasia & Eastasia). The thought stuck me:
WHAT IF THERE IS NO OCEANIA, OR EURASIA, OR EASTASIA - ONLY ONE GIANT DYSTOPIA???
How could that be pulled off? Endless propaganda, re-writing of history, mind control, social control, thought control, etc., and "re-education". The "soldiers" "returning from action" could actually have been in deep psychological re-education the entire time, and only released to give all appearances of war heroes because that's what they truly believed they were.
