I couldn't be rude to him because we were working together on a case. But I said to myself, this isn't a clothing shop, this is a meat market for fucking. He saw my disinterest and seemed disappointed.
He was a very strange man, but a really smart lawyer. We finished the case, I got paid, returned to South Africa, and we never contacted each other again.
I think he felt embarrassed and really concerned I'd seen this side of him.
He should have felt embarrassed. I suspect he was trying to groom you in that setting and take advantage of you. When he saw his plan wasn't working, he realized he'd outed himself.

I'm beginning to think it's a pervasive social problem that people have lost the art of conversation and the ability to interact in ways appropriate to the situation rather than in a sexually predatory or needy way with virtual strangers.

Having a client is very intimate and certain clients confuse attorney/client confidence with human intimacy.
Then you add loneliness, anger and disappointment on the part of the client, and an attentive lawyer, who is willing to listen (of course for a price) to the scenario, and you get the potential for wrong interpretations.
I stopped practicing divorce law probably around 2001, when a female client - after we got her final decree of divorce in the High Court that morning, then sent me an SMS that evening, saying she was in love with me and now that she was single I could do anything I wanted to with her.
That divorce case also involved a separate case where she alleged violence against her and sexual abuse of her child at the hands of the bloke whom she was divorcing (her second husband), so I suppose I was a support system for her.
After that case, I said "no more".
Since then I only do civil commercial matters.
As an ode to that matter, I wrote a black comedy piece, where she was a sub-plot in a bigger picture of clients with money, bad behaviour and how rancid the profession really is.
