Another means of defense is a nice slingshot, those bad boys can really do some damage.

Between when the baddies arrived and when they shoot the dog, you'll be awake and ready to wield your weapon. If you're in a blue state where using the gun for self-defense may be penalized, the first choice might be a moving van instead of the dog or gun.
