And to think I was begging my husband to apply for citizenship in Germany so we could move back to his land of birth, in 2001.
It was 2001 when the Patriot Act came in to being and the US invaded Afghanistan - before we shock-and-awed Iraq in 2003, and I thought we'd be freer in Germany.
I had just gone through a crazy hard time to exempt two of my sons from the newly required Hep A & B shots.
Which a long conversation with a CDC doctor had actually encouraged me to do.
I didn't know asking for a vaccine exemption could put a target on my back of hatred and Othering I had never dreamed possible.
