It is. It's all marketing and public relations. Years ago, I worked for a large polling firm. It was my job to write the questions, with the client's desired outcome in mind. Essentially, to carefully frame and parse the questions to coerce answers that would support a desired outcome. It's an extremely tawdry business. I did not stay long, very disillusioning to someone young and nearly fresh out of college, to realize that your job is to deceive and manipulate.
As long as some people, not that much given to politics:
1. believed that Democrats and Republicans were pretty much just slightly different flavors of the same basic thing,
2. believed that the same basic thing was a commitment to protecting their life, liberty, and property from enemies, both foreign and domestic,
3. believed that stories of one party about the other were “politics as usual” by party activists and radicals, you know, by folks who spent WAY more time than was normal or healthy--meaning anyone who spent more time on it than the politically uninterested,
4. believed that the occasional news of a politicians being involved in some kind of graft or perversity was related, not to political outlook, but to the kind of basic human nature that leads certain kinds of folks to enter politics, which ties directly into number 3, and
5. Considered that as long as their own day to day life continued in its relatively adequate, or maybe even good, way, they were justified in thinking that all the brouhaha in 3 and 4 above was just political squabbling by folks who didn’t have anything more important to do in the real world like normal people,
they could ignore a lot of things going on outside their own activities of life.
But once things started to get so extreme that they could no longer ignore them and they saw that their own life, liberty, property, family’s welfare were becoming severely eroded, then they slowly began to realize that they were wrong about 1 and 2 above and that something needed to be done to protect what they had always assumed to be basic day to day life that just sort of happened from folks who were actually proud of targeting them for destruction.
The question is whether their late in the game realization of the true state of affairs will be enough, given the progressive socialists’ more than a solid century of messing with the structure and function of government.
