I was aghast when I saw these and began to read up on it. I think that you may wish to start by reading Moth in the Iron Lung. He gives a better explanation of the basic science. The other interesting thing is that most of the limb atrophy that you see may be largely due to the fact that victims were placed in casts to prevent them from using the affected limb, which then atropied from disuse.
