Over time she became hesitatingly totally trusting of me. One day over a serious discussion on the matter of how close we were, she locked eyes with me and told me she had never felt pretty. I was shocked. She was dynamically beautiful both inside and out and it seemed that inner beauty flowed out of her, over and into me as a strong aura of her persona I had never felt in any other friendship woman to man. I told her that, and it seemed to melt her when I asked her why did she not look in a mirror.
It was the right thing to say because like a little girl, she took my arm in both hands, hugged it to her bosom, and swayed back and forth holding it. I instantly collapsed into a pile of jelly at her feet, emotionally. It hurt me...tore another huge chunk out of my heart as she looked into my eyes and broke me. The hurt was there, and I not only saw it but felt it.
It was the defining moment in our friendship, and a bond was established that has remained for decades and will to my end. How so? A woman always knows. She saw me break and nobody had ever been as careful, respectful and empathetic as I was to her.
Tragedy is that there are more like her out there. All she needed was respectful affection. She told me a few days later that there was no one like me. Being a smart ass I asked if that was good or bad. She smiled. Her eyes speak to me. I knew the answer. Then it came.
