The Republicans never thought Trump had a chance of winning their nomination. They thought he was a sideshow that would flame out but would benefit them by drawing attention to their preferred candidates. Until 2016, when asked who would be their nominee, the Republican elites would say "TPD" as in The Party Decides. The elites would choose the nominee and the regular voters support them. Trump changed the entire paradigm as the people rallied behind Trump. The entire system is rotten and Trump's greatest achievement was highlighting this.
Trump did more to undermine himself than Ryan could have by filling his cabinet with his political enemies and doing nothing to control their every contravention of his orders.
Remember the time that Pres. Obama lectured Paul Ryan like a grade school teacher lectures a child? And Ryan just smirked after having his school work he submitted to the teacher chewed up and spit back out in his face? He just slinked away after the school bell rang, his intelligence, his effort and his honor tattered and torn asunder. And unlike this recounting in the article, he was a coward, he never challenged the teacher to defend his intelligence, his effort and his honor. He accepted his "lesson" like a good little school boy does after the teacher "fixed" his mistake, promising to do and think what the teacher tells him to do from that point on.
That was when I knew Paul Ryan was a fraud. In a budget battle, April, 2011. Just a prop in a play, meant to discredit and dispose of the ideas his school work was supposed to represent.
