Only if an incendiary addition with a trigger is added to the device. You can’t cause Li-ion batteries found in consumer electronics to self-detonate on remote command. The batteries have protection built into their cable designed to prevent that from happening. I have designed them.

It doesn’t preclude the possibility that Mossad got a hold of a shipment of pagers in transit and altered the pagers, or that a terrorist who wants to bring down an airliner couldn’t do the same…alter a laptop or cell phone. As a designer of these protection devices, I see no way you can circumvent what these protection devices are doing.

No name recognized company is going to allow this to happen. It’s far far more likely these pagers were tampered with rather than perfect synchronized faults. Let’s stick to reality Dr. A.

I’m never sure what xray can see that would flag, this device has been tampered with. It does open up a Pandora’s box. Expect to be forced to check in all electronics powered off, soon.
