I spent a decade visiting Canada in the summers several years ago and have (had) several friends up there. A while back, one of my friends was asking me about Biden, and commenting on what a mess the southern border has become. I made the mistake of believing he had made a turn towards more conservative minded thinking and commented about some of Trudeau's atrocities. His reply was, "Actually, Trudeau is doing a pretty good job." I brought up the treatment of those involved with the Trucker Rally and my friend informed me that "Most Canadians wanted that to end and supported Trudeau." At that point I gave up going any further. Sadly, my friend has created distance between us.
The last time I was in Canada was before Trump was elected in 2016, and somebody in my group figured out I supported Trump. They spent the rest of my time there giving me shit about being a Trump supporter. I wish I could say it was in good fun, but it was mean spirited and made me feel very uncomfortable. West Coast Canadians are extremely liberal, and they don't pull any punches when it comes to harassing people that don't have the same opinions.
After that trip, we all met in Sedona, Arizona for some mountain bike riding, and they spent a good portion of that trip "teasing" me about being conservative minded. Even though I tried being understanding, it all became more than I was willing to deal with. I was never the one to bring up politics, and before Trump ran for office we all got along very well. Don't buy into the "polite Canadian" bullshit. They are as vicious and mean spirited as anyone.
I live on Vancouver Island west of Victoria in a small unincoporated area called Shirley, everyone is super nice even when you don't agree politically. Many of the residents come from other places, other parts of Canada, or from the US. We seem to be an anomaly. Most of them know my husband and I did not get jabbed and support Trump and are against the govt, we supported the People's Party of Canada and Maxime Bernier. But we rarely talk of politics because everyone wants to get along. Since my husband died many of my neighbours have been amazing and supportive and kind and helpful. And they are all jabbed. Maybe they got placebos. No crazy behavior or anything.
Toronto is another story, I lived there for almost 3 years, at first everything seemed good, but over time I found myself around people who were materialistic and snobby and generally unpleasant.
The last time I was in Montreal, people stepped on my feet and pushed me trying to get on a bus. Toronto was great compared with that.
I have spent a lot of time on the island, primarily in Cumberland or Victoria. All my friends either live on the island, West Vancouver, or Whistler. I am happy you have a good community where people are reasonable. I miss my Canadian friendships, but the crew I used to associate with believes their ideology so strongly that they can't help but make fun of me. It doesn't help that their entire circle feels just like they do. I've never been to Montreal or Toronto.
I hope you are able to find people who are like the ones I know. I'm surprised about Cumberland it is such a small community and lots of artists etc. CBC, Global and CTV have tight grips on a lot of people.
