And although most of these studies used sprayers for nasal application, it is much simpler to switch to just dipping a cotton swab into some mouthwash (from cap) and apply deep into each nostril.

Since most people routinely keep mouthwash and have cotton swabs (aka Q-tips) on hand, it is much more practical to encourage this method of application.  Mouthwash will keep the Povidine-Iodine buffered.
