He never should've been hired. I know the Sheriff, Jack Campbell, and he'll stand by his statement that all the guy had was misdemeanors that were old and that didn't prevent hiring him. I was born and raised in the area and I can tell you Hellinois is corrupt all over the state. I still can not understand why he chose to shoot and kill her. It was obvious when she said, in the name of Jesus I rebuke you, twice. she realized her life was in danger. Had there been issues from the past? Can't help but wonder if he met her somewhere and she rejected him and now he won't own up because he's white and she was black? Why didn't the other deputy knock that gun out of his hand? Way too many unanswered questions and we'll likely never get answers. This entire thing makes no sense and the jerk will never admit why he did this. He needs to go straight to the electric chair but good old Illinois got rid of the death penalty. For what it's worth, my ex was a RR cop, injured me and tried to kill me but I got away. We'd only been married 9 years.

I met Jack Campbell the sheriff and other police through my now ex. That said, a dirty state's attorney that knew my ex refused to do anything to him for what he did to me. The city police profiled my ex as a narcissist sociopath with a personality disorder, advised me to "carry" and understand my life was in danger as long as he was alive. Don't count on Illinois to do justice for Sonya Massey. RIP Sonya.

What a stupid crazy deranged cop! He killed an innocent woman for no reason. He is a murderer. He needs to go to jail for a long long long long time.

Cold blooded, unjustified murder should make him eligible for the death penalty, especially under color of authority.

I have watched the videos several times, including him at the front door, acting like a jerk because she wouldn’t come to the door fast enough for him. I saw nothing in the video that prompted him to pull his weapon, but when he did, she held the pot up in front of her face to protect her face and duck down and said I’m sorry, although she had nothing to be sorry for other than the fact that she said, I rebuke you in Jesus name, and thought he might have been offended by that. She made no movement towards the officer. She stood right at the sink with the pot. There was no absolutely none excuse for him firing at her and using deadly force. By the way, try grabbing a pot under both handles held at your. countertop height and see if you can throw it without throwing the whole pot. You’ll probably burn yourself and your wrists. Just don’t twist that way. If you can’t do the job, you shouldn’t be on the job.

Would you want an incompetent Doctor Who killed you to treat you? No more, so would you want a police officer like this on the job… She was not aggressive in any way shape or form throughout any of the interaction. Was this guy jacked up on steroids? They should do a blood test on him. I am disgusted at people trying to defend. This officer and claims she was trying to throw the pot towards the officer. When his partners body cam turns to the right, and comes back to the woman she’s standing in the same exact place as she was before is body cam turned, at the sink! And again you clearly see her duck defensively, while holding the pot up in front of her face to protect herself, that is absolutely MOT An aggressive move!

And then, to top that all off as he comes around the counter, for the cameras sake, he says “drop the pot, drop the pot!” While she’s laying there, dead on the floor with a bullet in her head… She was never a threat to him plain and simple.

very good sharing, this video and all is very troubling...and when ever we take one step forward we take 2 back with race etc. this was a devastating killing.

Expand full comment

Why do you say devastating killing? The police officer is obviously very bad news and has extreme psychological issues and deserves prison. With all the media rhetoric about anti white hatred coming from ALL directions directed at particularly white males why is everyone shocked when this kind of thing happens? Ashley Babbit was shot by a black officer and no one is overly concerned. How do we know if that black officer had it out for white people? We will never know because it's being buried and that is infuriating.

This officer is unstable and is now a murderer but why is the other black officer that killed a white woman not?

Apparently, he had a tazer on him which he should have pulled instead of the gun if he believed she presented a threat to him & his safety.

Sadly, he is either a poorly trained Sangamon County Sheriff or used excessive force in an unconstitutional way (4th Amendment).

Terrible tragedy no matter what color/shade of skin either was in.

poorly trained and excessive force, he is a killer, IMO should face death penalty. yet I love and support blue first.

Dr Paul - the Civil Right’s issue here is on one hand a Section 1983 Tennessee V Garner Deadly Force issue. The atty for this poor, dead woman’s family will most likely be suing every one in sight starting with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Dept & this Deputy.

The other issue is criminal - if I have heard correctly- the State’s Atty for this county has brought three (3) criminal charges against this Deputy Sheriff.

The deputy will have to get his own attorney.

It is a terrible incident & we have one dead woman whose life was ended needlessly (she may have had mental

issues also) & a police officer who sooo lacked in professional aptitude it is abominable.

We all need to first & foremost stop using the awful, unnecessary “f” word & treat fellow human beings with respect & seek dignified, careful responses to those who may or may not be dealing with serious mental challenges & serious life challenges.

Would it have been wiser to have left the home when the woman was sitting on the couch? Yes.

After leaving, if the woman had harmed herself, would law enforcement be liable? Possibly.

Bottom line - Qualified training needed & PROFESSIONALIZATION of LEO’s!

Teaser and gun for a young woman at such distance from him? He is obviously a deranged man committing a crime with no intention of help whatsoever.

Expand full comment

I believe he is charged with murder, as he should be. In the very first place, she contacted police for a suspected prowler and this jerk acted like it was an imposition! Secondly, they had absolutely no business entering her house and especially pestering her for her identification. If he doesn't spend a hard twenty for his actions, there's no justice!!

yes, should spend deep time, he imposed...the transaction was done when they said good night...he somehow had to get into her house

Expand full comment

Clive - if she allowed them (consented) entrance into her home - they are ok legally to be inside the premises. Also, there is Constitutional case law that gives them the authority to ask for identification.

Expand full comment

I understand that she could consent to entry and I didn't hear whether she did or not but my point was that she reported concerns about someone possibly OUTSIDE THE HOUSE. So they had no business all but inviting themselves in. Had they not done that, none of this would have happened. I could be wrong San but I believe the case law you are referring to only gives law enforcement the authority to ask for ID if the subject is suspected of committing a crime. Unless you are talking about the State Constitution of which I confess almost total ignorance. Thanks for the comment San.

I don’t think he would face the death penalty, and they need to be careful not to over charge him because people have gotten off because of that. Certainly negligent homicide should be a slam dunk conviction.

It looks like he might have entered the home with intent. Let's see what the jury thinks. Lucky for him he doesn't live in a death. If Trump was president cities would be burning.

She called THEM suspecting a prowler. They need her ID for a report I assume, which she couldn't produce. There are broken windows in a car, so they really don't know what's going on. She acts nervous - and for all they know someone could be in the house threatening her. How do you ascertain that apart from entering the home?

Should they have just looked around outside and drove away since they didn't see anyone?

He thought he was going to get boiling water thrown at him. No excuse - find some way to get her to drop the pot and the threat is over. He'll be charged, found guilty and imprisoned - but it's not first degree murder.

I cannot understand how homeowners get shot by police when they call the police for help. Sure, I am sure there are situations where the owner called them to ambush them, but this certainly does not look to be that case here. At least the cop who pulled the trigger was arrested.

It ticked me off when I read in one article they felt she might be having a mental break down. So call the EMT's and take her to the hospital. That's the usual protocol in Illinois. Murder has never been the protocol. There's more to this story and we'll likely never know the truth.

Emotional knee jerk reaction to shoot. When the system is corrupt many more than likely die and get perp off scott free within the corruption. If the woman called the cops due to possible prowler outside, what were these cops doing inside her home? She shouldn’t have allowed them inside. If they forced their way in, uninvited, they’re trespassing. She has committed no crime. She was calling for help. They should’ve done a sweep around the home & reported back to her, whether or not all was clear. In the kitchen, they simply could’ve told her to leave the pot on the stove. Turn it off & leave it there. Problem solved. Why did they not say something when she first picked up the pot? Police need training in proper communication skills, & deescalation strategies. Also in dealing with people with mental illness. Or call for backup for someone who can deal with a mentally disturbed person. She was not a suspect! She wanted help checking the perimeter of her home for a prowler. This cop was way out of line. I hope he is punished appropriately. So sad.

Why didn't one of them just walk over, turn the pot off and dump the water? In the brief video I saw, there's an edit at that point. You don't see her walking from the sofa to the kitchen. Editing is never good.

I live in Illinois. You may have seen my post on this. My ex found where I was 60 miles away. I heard a noise outside as did my dog. I called 911 where I live and the dispatch woman told me maybe it was a tree limb, go out and look. I said there are no trees, explained my situation with my ex, etc. She finally sent the local police, the Chief actually came. He asked to come in and I let him inside the door. He said he looked around and found nobody, no cars, no tracks but he believed me, made sure I was okay, locked & loaded too and left. He assured me he'd make a few rounds in his car the rest of the night. I thank God I now live in a very conservative Illinois County. Sangamon County is where Ms Massey lived and it is not conservative at all. In fact, I would bet they try to move his trial to another county. If they move it east to Macon County that county is very liberal. It's sad but just about anywhere in Illinois this dirty cop will not face the justice he deserves.

Expand full comment

I don't think his partner should get off scot-free though. As I have argued, "the second deputy had a duty to protect Sonya Massey from his rogue fellow officer. Not only did he fail to do this, he joined Grayson in creating the false impression that Massey was dangerous.”

I am wondering now because the officer said the hot water was close to them. If she threw it she was attempting to seriously injure the officers.

The somalian moslem DIEverSHITty hire who shot dead a white women in Minnesota was totally guilty but what happened to him or did he suffer no penalty for his murder of a white woman?

Expand full comment

Sangamon County was his sixth policing job in just four years. He'd been released from previous positions due to inappropriate behaviour, abuse of power, and poor decision making. He should've been flipping burgers rather than carrying a weapon. The Chief and HR have some explaining to do and should be facing civil suits from the victim's family.

I cannot condone this response .. the woman clearly emptied most of the boiling water into the sink.. you can hear it draining away.. there was a counter between her and the cop.. he was never in danger..I did not see her try to throw hot water at him.. she did raise the pan to protect herself.. and he closed distance which would have created panic.. but to unload three rounds at her head was clearly lethal.. and for what.. no taser option?

For my money .. too many cops are ex-military and they treat everyone like the enemy.

I seen too many people killed then handcuffed just in case .. like any dead person is going to get up and run away.. duh and double duh!
